ABOUT US

AI4CH – Artificial Intelligence for Cultural Heritage is the Interdepartmental Research Centre established at the University of Udine in 2022, within the framework of the 2022–2025 University Strategic Plan.

Established through the collaboration between the Department of Humanities and Cultural Heritage (DIUM) and the Department of Mathematical, Computer and Physical Sciences (DMIF), the Centre promotes, coordinates, and develops innovative research activities on the applications of Artificial Intelligence to both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. In addition to the University’s internal initiatives, AI4CH is open to collaborations with external bodies, institutions, and research groups, with the aim of expanding and strengthening the scientific network in this field.

AI4CH promotes interdisciplinary research by combining Digital Humanities and Artificial Intelligence for the processing, study, and enhancement of witnesses of history and culture: manuscripts and inscriptions, works of art, contemporary media, virtual reconstructions of archaeological sites and Cold War defensive structures, minority languages, and analyses of the hidden languages of literary texts and social networks. Particular attention is devoted to advanced experimentation, ethical considerations, and sustainability.

The establishment of the Centre was announced during the final roundtable of the 2022 Digital Humanities Marathon, an event that involved five departments of excellence, including the DIUM.
