ABOUT US

AI4CH promotes, conducts, and coordinates innovative research activities related to the applications of Artificial Intelligence in the field of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

AI4CH – Artificial Intelligence for Cultural Heritage – is an Interdepartmental Research Center established at the University of Udine in 2022 as part of the University's Strategic Plan 2022-2025.

It emerged as a result of collaboration between the Department of Humanistic Studies and Cultural Heritage e the Department of Mathematical, Computer, and Physical Sciences within their respective Interdepartmental Strategic Plans. AI4CH also welcomes external collaborations.

AI4CH fosters interdisciplinary research in the fields of digital humanities and artificial intelligence for the processing, exploration, and enhancement of historical and cultural artifacts in the broadest sense. This encompasses everything from inscriptions and ancient manuscripts to works of art and Media Studies, from the virtual reconstruction of archaeological sites and Cold War defense structures to minority languages in the region, as well as the analysis of hidden language in literary texts and social networks. The Center maintains a constant focus on cutting-edge experimentation, ethical considerations, and sustainability.

The establishment of the Interdepartmental Center was announced during the concluding roundtable of the Digital Humanities Marathon, a digital humanities event  that engaged five 'Dipartimenti di Eccellenza', including DIUM, in October 2022.
