Social, Mobile, Data & Crowd (SMDC)

RESEARCH DESCRIPTION

The Social, Mobile, Data & Crowd (SMDC) laboratory, founded in 2008 at the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics of the University of Udine, conducts research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, computer science, and social sciences.
The laboratory’s research activities primarily focus on Crowdsourcing, Natural Language Processing, and the evaluation of Information Retrieval systems. The laboratory has also addressed both theoretical and practical aspects of Mobile, Pervasive, and Ubiquitous Computing.
SMDC develops innovative methods to tackle complex challenges such as online disinformation, the analysis of cultural and social data, and the enhancement of cultural heritage through digital and interactive tools.

Technological Tools and Methods

  • Crowdsourcing and human-in-the-loop approaches, integrating contributions from experts and non-expert users to improve model accuracy and scalability.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROJECT

  • PhD projects: advanced research on intelligent systems for information veracity verification, the modeling of complex online social phenomena, the design of innovative collaborative platforms, and the assessment of the impact of data and models on cultural and social contexts.
  • Internships and collaborations: development and experimentation of mobile and web applications, database management and visualization platforms, and the implementation of innovative solutions for cultural tourism and the dissemination of cultural heritage.
